E-mail Filtering (Junk Mail)

The best way to stop unwanted e-mail is to use the Junk Mail Filter in your mailbox control center. This way you receive mail only from people on your list. You can add or delete addresses at any time. Just follow the instructions below.

  1. Click on Check Your Mail. (at top of page)
  2. Enter your Account ID and Password to access your mailbox.
  3. Click on Options in the lower left hand corner.
  4. Scroll down to "Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention".
  5. Check the box "Filter Junk E-mail. Check the Junk E-mail folder regularly to ensure that you do not miss messages that you want to receive."
  6. Click the button "Manage Junk E-mail Lists".
  7. In the box that pops open, select Safe Senders from the drop down menu.
  8. Now click "Add" on the right side.
  9. In the box that appears, enter the email address of someone you want to receive email from and click OK.
  10. You can enter a domain name such as AOL.com for example. However, this will allow all emails from anyone at AOL.com to pass through. (not recommended)
  11. Repeat Step 9 for each person you want to receive mail from.
  12. When you have entered all the email addresses of people you want to receive mail from, then:
  13. Check BOTH boxes at the bottom of the window
    a) Trust e-mail from your contacts.
    b) Treat all e-mail as Junk E-mail unless it has come from a member of Safe Senders or Safe Recipients lists.
  14. Now click OK.
  15. Now click SAVE AND CLOSE at the top of the page to save your personal settings.

General Information on Junk Mail (SPAM)

Sad, but true... some people do not use Anti-Virus Protection or regularly update the software as needed.  In some cases, your friend or family member may have a "virus" that collects all of the email addresses in their address book on their computer and then send out emails that appear to be from them. If you get an email from them that is a virus or junk e-mail, do them a favor and let them know that their computer may be infected.

One good example of this is some of our Dependanet customers have got emails that appear to be from our office stating that their email account has been closed and with an attachment.

  1. We never ever send emails to our customers with attachments.
  2. We never send emails out saying that your email account has been closed.
  3. DO NOT open the attachment and just delete the email.
  4. How did this happen? Most likely one of our customers computer got infected with a "worm virus" and had our email address in their address book.

Technology Today... Obsolete Tomorrow

Technology advances extremely fast. A computer you bought 6 months ago is already obsolete as far as technology goes. And the same with many software programs. That's why it is important to update them often and regularly.
(see Software & Information for information on available software)

Spammers are always one step ahead of technology it seems. For every update software companies make in the effort to combat Junk Mail (SPAM), the Spammers are already working on ways to get around it.

One common method used by Spammers is to "mask" their emails using your family and friends email address to make it appear as though it is coming from them.

Another more advanced method we refer to as "Perfect Spam" is embedded in the Header of emails. This can be found in the "Properties" of an email that you receive. In laymen terms, it blocks any detection by mail servers that are setup to block unsolicited email.
